I just finished Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez. Debbie moved to Kabul to help start a beauty school and give Afghani women a chance to learn skills, enjoy fellowship and make money. The book was very interesting - hard to put down but the ending was disappointing. But, this is a memoir not a novel and life doesn't always have a happy ending. Def worth a read!
After looking up the book, I found drama surrounding it. Read about it on NPR's website.

My other memoir is an oldie by Isak Dinesen, Out of Africa. Isak moves to Kenya, which was then a British Colony to work on a coffee plantation and ends up running it by herself. Maybe you've seen the movie? It was written in the 1930s and so far is also a good read. She presents such details about the African landscape, safaris and what she calls "the Natives."

Also waiting patiently on my bedside table is Paris to the Moon by Adam Gopnik. Gopnik writes about his life as a North American in Paris. The book is a collection of essays from when he lived there. I adore Paris and cannot wait to dig in to this.
